Winning the region is the first step for each team on this journey, and the West Region appears to be one of the strongest in the field. Here is a closer look at the West Region and what might play out over the next two weeks.
Top Contenders to Win the West Bracket
When we look at the top contenders, we have to first take a look at the top seed. The Gonzaga Bulldogs are the number 1 seed in the West again this season, and it’s a place that is familiar to this program.
Mark Few’s squad was in the National Championship Game a season ago, and this team is talented enough to get there again. There are other blue blood programs in this bracket, and they will give the Bulldogs a challenge.
Duke is the number three seed in the West, and the Texas Tech Red Raiders are number three. Duke is always a team to watch in the NCAA Tournament, especially as this is the final season for head coach Mike Kryzewski.
Arkansas and UConn round out the rest of the top five seeds in the West Region, and those teams have to be considered as contenders as well.
Two Bracket Busters in the West
Surveying the bracket and looking for underdog teams is one of the best traditions that comes with the NCAA Tournament. This region is obviously loaded with some terrific programs, but there are some potential upsets as well.
The 13th seeded Vermont Catamounts are one team to watch out for in the West Region, and this is a team that can go on a run. Davidson (10 seed) is another program that has had success in the NCAA Tournament, and they will be a team to watch out for in the West Region.
This region also included a play-in game for a number 11 seed between Rutgers and Notre Dame. Both teams come from a Power 5 Conference, but they could technically be viewed as a bracket buster for the first weekend at least.
2022 West Region Winner Prediction
There should be some drama in the West Region, but the top seed is going to prevail in the end. Gonzaga has been one of the best teams in the country all season long, and they are going to continue to play well in the NCAA Tournament.
The winner of the Duke/Texas Tech matchup will provide Gonzaga with a tough challenge, but the Bulldogs are too good. The number one seed isn’t going to win every single region, but that will be the case in the West as Gonzaga advances to the Final Four.
