It’s one of the biggest nights of the year for Alberta harness racing with over $400,000 up for grabs on Super Finals Night. The four $75,000 tests, for the best two and three-year-old pacers in the province, will likely see the morning line favourites taking home the biggest prizes. That being said the only one that truly stands out, in any of the Super Finals action, is GTS KAYLA in Race 11 – she’ll be a key for many in the Late PICK 4 play. Race 8 – ABSS SUPER FINALS 2YO BOYS

7 COME ON SANTANA stepped off to win his latest by nine with Jody Jamieson aboard and his 26.3 smoker on the end came with ease. Tonight Doug McNair shows up to drive many contenders and this could be one of his best shots at a big money victory. This colt crushed for fun last time out – never facing a challenger throughout. 

4 GREY HORIZON was all out last time in just his second loss of the season. I’ve always loved my roans and it’s hard to not back Brandon Campbell in the bike. This second-highest earner in the field is a must play and we’re going to EXACTOR BOX him with the one above and hope to at least double our money. Let’s go!

1 MATTEUSE beat our second choice in his latest off a perfect trip – pacing three seconds faster than he’d ever been clocked before. He should be in the hunt again, but to ask him for another mild upset would be asking too much. A top three threat all day, but I just don’t see him winning in here. Use him in the TRI.

6 HF WINKNAT JENNA is strictly a longshot player for the SUPERFECTA as I don’t see him tangling with my top trio, but I could certainly see him finishing up best of the rest for Team Haining.

Race 9 – ABSS SUPER FINALS 2YO GIRLS

2 OUTLAWGUNS N ROSES is clearly the highest earner of this bunch in 2023 and for that reason we’ll put her on top. If she can manage not to wander in the late going – she’ll be posing in the winner’s circle afterwards.

4 BYBY BABY BYBY has really taken to the big tracks of Alberta and she’ll be a tough customer once again, but my top choice does appear to have the edge on her. We’ll not even look at the PICK 5 here – it’s a jackpot wager.

5 FOOTHILLS MAGIC was much-improved in her latest and tonight Doug McNair hops aboard. We have her pegged for third, but she could step it up even more tonight. We’ll call this one the ‘beware horse’ of the night.

1 BORN A SPY has been perfect for hitting the top three all season and she’s worth a look again in here, but we’re thinking for the SUPERFECTA. A tall order to expect anything more, but it is a horse race.

Race 11 – ABSS SUPER FINALS 3YO GIRLS

6 GTS KAYLA had way too much traffic to overcome in her latest and there’s not one – in here – that would have done as well as her under the circumstances. Plain and simple – this filly looks much the best – single her up!

4 YOU PROMYST did beat our top choice – by a head – back in September, but our top choice was asked to pace a big middle-half of 55 on that day. I believe she’s gonna race for a place in this one – use her for the deuce.

1 MY LITTLE CHLOE has been showing improvement in recent starts and may show even more now with the addition of Doug McNair. We’ll give her an honest shot at hitting the top three, but the win is doubtful. 

3 OUTLAWABOVENBEYOND appears to be a SUPERFECTA player for driver Mike Hennessy in this one. She did win big at Lacombe in late August and early September, but she hasn’t come close to that kind of speed since. 

Race 12 – ABSS SUPER FINALS 3YO BOYS

1 BLUE STAR MERCURY has never been better after doing all the work and getting paid in the Western Canada Pacing Derby… They just couldn’t get close to him with his 26.2 closing quarter speed. They’ll have to catch him!

3 OVER THE HORIZON will try to match his trip from last time. His good early speed and the decent post should allow for that to happen, but the trailing horse – following out the rail starter – could be the wrench in this one.

8 VIRTUAL HORIZON draws the worst post again and for that reason we’ll not pick him on top. We don’t see this one blasting out, but if he did and was able to find a spot up close – then we’d be saying there’s a chance.

5 MICKIE MANTLE could be best of the rest if he can find his ‘A’ game. That 1:52.1 win over Fraser may have been a fluke, but put Doug McNair in the bike and who knows what will come of it. He’s an upset possibility.
