No Kentucky Derby on the first Saturday in May but that doesn’t mean there wont be any derby action.
Firstly over 22 horses have been entered for 2 division of the Arkansas derby (G1) and secondly those horses will be competing now in split divisions, with each division awarding 170 points toward starting eligibility in the Sept. 5 Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs.
So,”Oaklawn announced March 20 that the original $1 million purse for the Arkansas Derby would be cut to $750,000 after the casino closed March 16 because of the coronavirus. Once the race was split, Oaklawn committed back to the $1 million—spread over the two divisions.”
Some race fans like the idea of multiple stakes on a given day and get the addition of the Oaklawn Handicap a Grade II event contested at 1 1/8m Dirt for a purse of $600,000 with 14 starters going to post on the same afternoon
The Field have been drawn and listed below with resident handicapper Terry Wilson providing his picks for this afternoons race card. I am banking that Terry will have a big day today as he’s not a chalk player and likes to follow price horses.
