4 min readTCU and Iowa State will be meeting for just the seventh time in their history. The Horned Frogs hold a 5-1 series lead. Since beginning Big 12 play in 2012, TCU is 2-1 versus Iowa State. TCU is 2-0 versus Iowa State in Ames, 2-1 in Fort Worth and 1-0 at neutral sites (2005 Houston Bowl). TCU won 55-3 in last year’s regular-season finale to capture its first Big 12 championship. The Horned Frogs’ only previous Big 12 visit to Ames was a 21-17 victory in 2013. Iowa State took a 37-23 victory in 2012 in the Horned Frogs’ first-ever Big 12 home game. It also snapped a 12-game TCU winning streak that was the longest in the nation at the time. Prior to TCU beginning Big 12 play in 2012, the teams had not met since a 27-24 Horned Frogs’ victory in the 2005 Houston Bowl.
With his two touchdown passes at Kansas State, Trevone Boykin has 21 this season. He is just the second TCU quarterback with at least 20 touchdown passes in consecutive years, joining Andy Dalton (23, 2009; 27, 2010). Boykin had a TCU record 33 touchdown passes last season. Trevone Boykin is one of just four quarterbacks nationally with 10 300-yard passing games over the last two seasons. Boykin ranks third nationally for most 250-yard passing games over the last two seasons.
Aaron Green, with a team-high 625 yards rushing on a 6.4 per carry average, ison pace for TCU’s first 1,000-yard season since Ed Wesley ran for 1,078 in 2010. Green is averaging 104.2 yards per game rushing. He is on pace for 1,355 yards which would be the highest total by a Horned Frog since LaDainian Tomlinson led the nation with 2,158 in 2000. Green had an 86-yard touchdown run on the game’s opening snap at Kansas State. It was the fourth-longest rush in TCU history and the longest since Tomlinson had an 89-yard scoring run versus UTEP in 2000. It was TCU’s longest play from scrimmage since a 92-yard touchdown pass from Trevone Boykin to Deante’ Gray against Texas Tech last season. Green became the first TCU player since Tomlinson in 2000 to rush for at least 160 yards in back-to-back games when he ran for 164 and 162 in consecutive weeks versus SMU and Texas Tech, respectively. Green is tied for fourth nationally with two games this season of at least 150 yards rushing. He has topped the 100-yard mark seven times in the last 13 games. Green is tied for the national lead in multi-touchdown games (4) via the rush in 2015. He has run for two touchdowns in four of the last five contests. His eight rushing scores on the season top TCU.
No 3 TCU will be the first ranked opponent Iowa State has faced at kickoff. Two of ISU’s non-conference opponents (Iowa and Toledo) are currently in the top-25 but were not ranked at the time of the game. Iowa State is 17-177-2 all-time vs. ranked opponents. ISU has lost 12-straight games vs. ranked opponents. Its last win over a rated foe was a 37-23 win at No. 15 TCU on October 6, 2012. ISU’s last win over a ranked opponent at home was on Nov. 18, 2011 in a 37-31 double overtime victory vs. No. 2 Oklahoma State. It was ISU’s lone victory over a top-5 team. ISU head coach Paul Rhoads is 4-24 vs. ranked opponents in his tenure as the Cyclone head coach.
Rhoads owns 23.5 percent of ISU’s career wins over ranked opponents.
Iowa State has showed major progress this season under the direction of Defensive Coordinator Wally Burnham. ISU switched to a 3-4 defense this season and the results have paid off. ISU has held three opponents to under 310 yards of total offense. The Cyclones have been a much more aggressive defense with their new scheme, recording 15.0 sacks and 35.0 TFL. ISU currently ranks second in the Big 12 and 16th nationally in sacks per game (3.0) and ranks fourth in the Big 12 and 30th nationally in TFL per game (7.0). ISU has one of the largest improvements nationally in opponent rushing TD per game at -1.72: 2014 (2.92), 2015 (1.20). ISU allowed 18 rushing TDs in its first five games of 2014. ISU has allowed six so far this season. ISU’s improvement on defense can be traced to a slew of junior college transfers and freshmen playing in their first games as Cyclones. A total of 39 of the team’s 86 tackles in the first game vs. UNI were recorded by players competing in their first game as Cyclones. Of the 13.0 TFL recorded, 6.5 were from newcomers. 12.0 of ISU’s 15.0 sacks this season have been recorded by junior college transfers. Senior DE Dale Pierson ranks sixth in the nation in sacks (6.0) and ranks fourth in the Big 12 and 17th in the nation in TFL (8.0).
Freshman CB Brian Peavy ranks fourth in the Big 12 and 37th nationally in pass breakups (1.2).
Senior Sam Richardson is one of six active QBs to play their entire career in FBS with more than 5,000 passing yards and 1,000 rushing yards. Richardson ranks fourth all-time at ISU in rushing yards by a quarterback at 1,039. Richardson is 14th in completions (523), 17th in total offense (6,803) and 20th in passing yardage (5,764) among active FBS QBs.
